About John Eager

John Eager is the Principal of WinAbu Consulting.

John Eager is a Chartered Accountant, and earned an MBA from the University of New Hampshire in the US (2009).

On qualifying as an accountant in 1994, his first assignment was in the dynamic growth-by-acquisition Adare PLC. He followed this with a long period as a finance professional and project manager in the emerging Irish technology sector, in both boot-strapped and funded companies. He managed start-ups and spin-outs, raised equity, and developed and appraised business plans for small Irish technology companies.

Moving back to Adare in 2001, he was responsible for IT across the group and managed several internal corporate ventures using the internet and new software to build customer solutions. He served two periods as Interim Finance Director in crisis situations in large subsidiaries of the group. He worked there until the group’s trade-sale and successful exit from MBO in 2006.

Buy & Sellsnap

Since 2006 John has been involved directly in solving problems. He was working with a distribution company managing its growth, when he had to “about-turn” to plan an immediate reduction in corporate size as revenues fell rapidly in the first year of the recession. He joined, and led as Interim MD, the post-receivership rescue of the well-known publication Buy&Sell in 2009, resetting its business model for the Recession.

In 2010, he was appointed CEO of Snap, the national print franchise, to lead the long-term turnaround of the network of franchises. He had to deal with several acute financial issues, while strategically re-positioning the group and its products in online and offline. 8 centres closed in this period, 4 re-opened, and 1 new centre was commissioned. A leading website services company was acquired to complement the move into online. The turnaround was declared successfully complete after 3½ years.

John is a member of the Chartered Accountants Interim Managers group.

caim-header

John formed WinAbu Consulting in March 2014. He coined the phrase “WinAbu” to reflect his long-term business philosophy of “win-win”, but with the Irish twist of “Abú” for winning.

John Eager is originally from Artane in Dublin and now lives in Co. Meath, where he coaches in his daughters’ Gaelic Football club. John is a keen Rep. of Ireland soccer fan, and has completed 10 triathlons.
